Frequently Asked Questions

What is a MERV rating?

MERV Rating, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, is an industry standard for measuring the efficiency of air filters. The lowest possible MERV rating is a 1, while the highest efficiency rating is 20. Lower MERV rated filters will trap larger particulate in the air while filters with higher ratings will trap smaller particulates.

Generally speaking MERV 8 filters are recommended for most residential use as are MERV 11. Again, the higher the MERV rating the greater the filter’s ability to trap finer airborne particulate. Please note that filters with a MERV rating higher than MERV 11 may be too restrictive for your residential system and negatively impact your home heating & air conditioning systems. Please consult your HVAC professional before installing any filter with a MERV rating higher than 11.

Is changing my filter really all that important?

Yes, keeping a clean air filter in your HVAC system really is important. The filter is the most important and overlooked component in your system. Here’s why:
Efficiency: A dirty filter makes your HVAC system work harder to heat or cool your house. This requires additional energy to be used which directly equates to higher energy bills and more money out of your pocket!

Wear and tear on your system: When your home air filter is dirty, your HVAC system has to work harder to push air through that dirty filter. This additional wear and tear adds up quickly and will increase maintenance and repair costs, while significantly shorter life of your HVAC system.

Your Health: Your home has two air filtration systems. One being your HVAC system and the second being your lungs! Wouldn’t you rather the dust, pollutants, & dander that exist in everybody’s home end up in the filter in the HVAC system instead of airborne and in your lungs? Remember, that the particulate that is not trapped by your HVAC system remains airborne in your home.

Filter life varies depending on multiple factors. These factors include the filter type, conditions inside and outside your home and the type of HVAC equipment. Use this as a guideline:
1” Filters- approximately every 30-60 Days
2” Filters- approximately every 60-90 Days
4” Filters- approximately every 90-120 Days
Homes where there are pets and/or smokers may require an accelerated filter change schedule. In all cases do not exceed your HVAC manufacturer’s recommendations and warranty guidelines for filter replacement.
